Arthur Danto, art critic and philosopher, once cited Andy Warhol as saying,
"How can you say one style is better than another?
You ought to be able to be an Abstract Expressionist next week,
or a Pop artist, or a realist, without feeling you've given up something."
To Danto, Warhol had proved through his works that we have reached an "end in art history", where artists have no need to contribute to art history, or to propel art into new and risky frontiers.
In this exhibition, one of Singapore's foremost performance artists, Lee Wen, offers instead his two-dimensional work - graphite drawings, oil paintings and digital prints. Does his pluralistic practice in this postmodern age support the end of art history? |
